New York City Break Part 2

Enjoying the view of the Statue of Liberty
Enjoying the view
We decided we should at least do some touristy things while we were in New York (most of the afternoons turned in to shopping!) and we did manage to walk around the majority of New York, well, up to about halfway up central park.

Statue of Liberty from the Staten Island ferry
Oh look!
Obviously, we fancied a trip to Liberty Island for a visit up to the crown of the Statue of Liberty, but there were no crown tickets left that day, and because of hurricane damage, Ellis Island is closed until further notice. We decided there was no point the in paying to go to Liberty Island and look at it from the bottom, so decided to brave the Staten Island ferry for free instead, to cruise on by it. We didn't stay on Staten Island though - got the ferry straight back again.

We had our breakfast before we got on the ferry though. New York means bagels right? I have never struggled so much to make a choice of cream cheese, so chose the healthy option. Strawberry cream cheese had strawberries in it!

I spy strawberries!
We also visited Ground Zero - the 9/11 Memorial, two days after the 9/11 anniversary and it was quite shocking. Firstly, the south and north pool fountains are amazing, and the names written around the edges of the fountains are really touching, especially those that had flowers placed in them in remembrance. For me, it was completely different to see a memorial for something that is so recent, and it had quite an impact on me especially as I remember exactly where I was when somebody told me about it, as opposed to other memorials I have seen that are for something that happened way before my time. Plus, the new One World Trade Center is massive, the tallest building in New York City after it surpassed the Empire State Building in 2012.

Then we hit the shops. I actually did quite well for not spending too much money... to start with! We had a good late lunch at Aroma Espresso Bar; grilled halloumi salad, we also had a peanut butter stop at about 6pm. Peanut butter smoothie with bananas, soy and honey and Katie was ambitious with a peanut butter chocolate brownie sundae at Peanut Butter & Co.

We met up with Amelia, who lives 2 doors down from us at home and is working in New York for the year that evening. We picked up a bottle of wine on the way; by bottle we mean magnum, they don't do anything by halves in America do they? Her flat in Hell's Kitchen is lovely, with an amazing rooftop terrace; a view over New York lit up at night while drinking wine is amazing. What more could you want?
